Frequently Asked Questions

Is online notarization legal in my state?

Yes. Virginia was the first state to authorize fully remote online notarization (RON) in 2011. Our notaries are commissioned under Virginia law and authorized to notarize documents for signers located anywhere.

What IDs do you accept?

We accept any valid government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, passport, or military ID. Before your session, you’ll complete a secure identity verification process online (KBA and ID scan).

How do I receive my notarized document?

After your session, you’ll receive a tamper-evident PDF with our electronic seal, signature, and an audit trail that meets Virginia’s RON security requirements.

Can you provide witnesses?

Yes. If your document requires witnesses, we can provide them for an additional coordination fee or you may bring your own witnesses to the session.

I’ve only used an in-person notary public before. Is online notarization legal in Virginia?

Absolutely. Virginia pioneered remote online notarization, and documents notarized this way are legally valid and accepted nationwide under state and federal law (UETA and ESIGN).

What do I need in order to get my documents notarized online in Virginia?

You’ll need a computer, tablet, or smartphone with a camera and microphone, a valid photo ID, and a reliable internet connection. Upload your document and we’ll handle the rest.

Can a notary in another state notarize my Virginia documents?

Yes. Virginia notaries can notarize documents for signers located anywhere, including other states and countries, as long as the notary is physically located in Virginia during the notarization.

How much does online notarization cost through Online Notary?

Our pricing is simple and affordable: $19 per notarization, or $49 for up to three documents in one session. There are no hidden fees, and you’ll receive your notarized documents immediately after completion.
